CIOTA - Brief History

BRIEF HISTORY

The Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIOTA) was established in 1988 as a professional body for transport practitioners in Nigeria. The Institute was formally incorporated in 1993 under the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAP 59) Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as a Company Limited by Guarantee. In 1999, the Institute was chartered by an Act of the National Assembly (Act 26 of 1999) as the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria. The Act was signed into law by the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on 26th May, 1999.

Establishment

The Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIOTA) was established as a professional body for transport practitioners in Nigeria.

1999

Chartered Status

The Institute was chartered by an Act of the National Assembly (Act 26 of 1999). The Act was signed into law by the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on 26th May, 1999.

Charter Enactment

The Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria establishment Act was enacted as an Act of National Assembly on the 22nd May, 2019 and gazette with Federal Government Act No.27 of 2019.

CIOTA CHARTER AND THE PROFESSIONAL TRANSPORT ADMINISTRATOR

The Chartered institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria establishment Act was enacted as an Act of National Assembly on the 22nd May, 2019 and gazette with Federal Government Act No.27 of 2019 – as a Body corporate with perpetual secession, charged with the responsibility of advancing the study, training and practice of transport management and administration in Nigeria; and for other related matters.

The Act confers a sectoral professional regulatory responsibility on CIOTA, making it the prime pioneer institute in the Transport sector in Nigeria. In addition to the above stated responsibilities, CIOTA has also been approved to set up a Council for the Registration of Transportants (CORTRANS), having the powers to regulate and control the practice of professional transport management and administration in ALL ITS RAMIFICATIONS in Nigeria.
